In addition to all this, they need to fed, bathed, groomed etc with great care. This is why every new parent needs to learn certain things on how to take care of a newborn. There is always a learning curve so parents should not feel overwhelmed but take it one step at a time.

Bathing a Newborn

One of the main tasks a parent will have to master is giving a newborn a bath. Bathing a newborn infant is a delicate task that requires the parents' full attention. On average, a newborn can be bathed 2 to 3 times a week as opposed to every day. Before a baby is given a bath, parents should ensure that they have all the bathing supplies ready and within reach. This included the towels, soaps, shampoos, baby care ointment etc. Also, parents should have the babies bedtime clothes ready. Bedtime clothes could include the onesies, swaddle cloth, Infant Knot Hats, clean diapers socks etc. Babies should be bathed with baby soap that is made specifically for the delicate skin of a newborn. The soap and shampoos should be mild and gentle to the skin and should not contain any harsh chemicals. The infant baby’s head should always be above water as the parent gently cleans them with a  washcloth. Babies should never be left unattended in a bathtub no matter how small the bath water is. The bath water should be lukewarm in temperature and parents can test the temperature of the water on their skin or with a thermometer when preparing for bath time.

Massaging a Newborn

Massaging a baby brings the baby lots of comforts and soothing relaxation and it’s also a great way to bond with the baby. Massaging helps increase blood circulation and could also help the baby fall asleep faster. When giving a baby a massage, the parent can use some baby oil that is gentle and soothing to the skin. A massage can be given at any time to calm and relax the baby but one of the best times is right before their bath.

Carrying a Newborn

Newborn infants are tiny and fragile. As such, special care must be taken when carrying and handling them. When babies are carried, they should be help firmly so they don’t fall but not too tight so they are uncomfortable. They should not be shaken vigorously as this could cause damage to their delicate insides. Anybody handling a newborn should always wash and disinfect their hands first and babies should be kept far away from sick people. When riding in a car with a baby, they should be kept in a car seat that’s appropriate for their size and body weight.

As a newborn grows older, they will no be groomed and this includes things like cutting their hair and trimming their nails. Babies nails need to be trimmed regularly so they don’t scratch their face or body with their long nails. It’s best to rim a baby’s nails when they are asleep. The nails of babies are soft so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Care should be taken not to injure their delicate fingers or toes when trimming their nails and toenails. The edges of the nails should not be trimmed in order to avoid ingrown nails from forming.

How to Take Care of yourself as you Nurse a Newborn

Parents should set visiting hours for visitors after a baby is born. As friends and family would love to come to visit, it’s best to set times to receive visitor so the mum has time to rest and recover. Setting visiting hours will prevent visitors from coming at all hours or from coming when the mum is getting some much-needed sleep. Also, visitors should wash their hands or clean their hands with hand sanitizer before holding or touching the baby. This is very important because babies have weak immune systems that are not fully developed. As such they are more susceptible to catching diseases or germs from others.

Get Help

If a new mom feels overwhelmed with a new baby, then they should get help if they can. This could mean hiring a nanny or enlisting the help of a family member. Getting help might be very important especially in the first few days or weeks when the mum is still recovering and probably still in pain.

Get Out of the House

After a mum gives birth to a newborn it is usually an overwhelming experience with the mum trying to take care of the delicate newborn while also trying to get back to their former self. Mums should not neglect their own wellbeing or healing period after having a baby. New moms do not need to stay indoors for weeks after having a baby. They should take some time to get out of the house and get some sunlight. They should go on walks, go on date night, or go see a movie. Just something to get them in a different environment and outdoors will help speed their recovery altogether.
